Toronto Police Service is asking for the public’s help in identifying two suspects involved in an assault in Church-Wellesley Village, a well-known community area in the city.
The incident happened shortly after midnight on Saturday, around 12:22 a.m., near the intersection of Church Street and Alexander Street in Toronto. According to police, the victim was walking in the area when a car passed by and two individuals inside allegedly shouted a homophobic slur at him.
Investigators say the suspects then stopped their vehicle, got out, and followed the victim. When they caught up with him, they physically assaulted him before fleeing the scene in a dark-coloured sedan. The victim’s condition has not been detailed, but the case is being taken seriously by authorities.
The investigation is being handled by the police Hate Crime Unit, which is looking into the incident due to the nature of the language used before the attack. Officials say such cases are treated with priority, as they involve targeting individuals based on identity.
Police have released descriptions of the suspects. The first suspect is described as a white man, about six feet tall with a thin build, wearing all-black clothing and a black ski mask. The second suspect is described as a white man, approximately five feet nine inches tall, also with a thin build and dressed in black clothing with a ski mask.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information, including video footage from the area, to come forward. Even small details could help identify the suspects and move the investigation forward.
Reacting to the incident, Evan Solomon, Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre, said he was deeply disturbed by the attack. He emphasized that no one should face violence or abuse because of their identity and called for continued efforts to ensure safety and respect for all communities.
The Church-Wellesley area, often referred to as “The Village,” is known as a symbol of inclusion and support for the 2SLGBTQI+ community. The incident has raised concerns about safety and the need for stronger awareness and action against hate-related crimes.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue their search for the suspects.
