A Russian military transport aircraft crashed in the annexed region of Crimea on Tuesday evening, killing all 30 people on board. The incident was confirmed by Russian Defense Ministry, which said the aircraft was on a scheduled flight at the time of the crash.

The plane, identified as an Antonov An-26, was carrying 23 passengers and seven crew members. According to officials, the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control at around 6 p.m. local time before crashing in a remote area.

Preliminary reports from the Defence Ministry suggest that the crash was likely caused by a technical malfunction. Authorities have stated that there was no indication that the aircraft came under fire or was involved in any external attack.

Reports from state media and unnamed sources indicate that the plane may have crashed into a cliff. The accident occurred approximately 25 kilometres east of Sevastopol, a key port city in the region.

Following the crash, Investigative Committee of Russia launched a criminal investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident. The probe will focus on possible safety violations and technical issues related to the aircraft.

The Antonov An-26 is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft developed during the Soviet era and widely used for military and transport operations. Although it has been in service for decades, concerns have occasionally been raised about ageing aircraft and maintenance challenges.

The crash adds to a series of aviation incidents involving older aircraft and highlights ongoing safety concerns within military aviation systems. Authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses.

Annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 continues to make the region sensitive, but officials have emphasized that there is currently no evidence linking the crash to any military conflict or hostile activity.
