On Wednesday, Venezuela’s aviation authority declared a ban on several international airlines, labeling them as engaging in “terrorism” due to the suspension of flights to the nation. The affected airlines include Iberia from Spain, TAP from Portugal, Avianca from Colombia, LATAM from Chile and Brazil, and Turkish Airlines.
The civil aviation authority expressed through Instagram that these airlines would have their operational permits annulled for “colluding with the state terrorism actions pushed by the United States government and unilaterally halting air commercial operations.”
This action follows US warnings about heightened military activity in the Caribbean, aimed primarily at combating drug trafficking. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro asserts that these military movements are intended to destabilize his regime.
The halting of airline operations and the resulting ban have hindered passenger travel, intensifying tensions between Venezuela, the US, and the impacted nations. The government perceives the actions of these airlines as part of a larger political agenda against Venezuela.
Travelers and operators seek further clarity regarding alternative routes and the restoration of services. The aviation authority noted that airlines collaborating with “foreign aggression” could face equivalent sanctions.
