James Gunn’s new superhero movie Superman continues to do well at the North American box office. Even in its second weekend, it made $57.3 million, keeping its spot as the No. 1 movie in theaters. Despite dropping 54% from its first weekend, this is still normal for big summer films.
So far, Superman has earned $406.8 million worldwide in just two weeks. This is a strong start for DC Studios, which hopes the film will help restart its movie plans. The film cost $225 million to make, and thanks to good reviews and strong audience support, it is likely to make a profit soon.
DC Studios has big goals for the future. Superman is the first film in a 10-year plan to bring new energy to its superhero movies. Other upcoming films include Supergirl and Clayface, which are planned for release in 2026.
However, Superman is not the only movie doing well right now. In second place is Jurassic World: Rebirth, which made $23.4 million in its third week. Starring Scarlett Johansson, the film has already made $648 million worldwide.
In third place is I Know What You Did Last Summer, a horror movie that opened with $13 million. It is based on a popular 1997 film. While the budget was only $18 million, the new version got poor reviews, with only 38% positive scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers also gave it a low C+ grade on CinemaScore.
Smurfs, a new animated movie from Paramount Pictures, opened with $11 million and came in fourth. The film features singer Rihanna as the voice of Smurfette. It did not get good reviews either, scoring just 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. But international sales were better, with the film earning $22.6 million overseas.
In fifth place was F1: The Movie, a racing film starring Brad Pitt. It brought in $9.6 million in North America and $29.5 million overseas, for a total of $460.8 million worldwide so far.
Another new release, Eddington, opened with $4.2 million. This film, from director Ari Aster, has received mixed opinions. It tells the story of a sheriff and a mayor with different political views during the pandemic. Some people liked it, but many did not. The movie cost $25 million to make, and also got a C+ from audiences.
Even though not all new movies are doing well, the 2025 summer box office has been strong. According to Comscore, total summer movie sales are up 15.9% from last year. So far, summer ticket sales in North America have reached $2.6 billion, showing that people are excited to return to cinemas.
