Roughriders Release Ajou Ajou After CFL Investigation

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have officially released wide receiver Ajou Ajou following the findings of an investigation by the Canadian Football League into misconduct allegations. The league concluded that Ajou engaged in “aggressive and unwelcome physical contact” with multiple women at a restaurant in Regina on November 18, 2025—the same day the team celebrated its Grey Cup victory.

According to the CFL, the incident came to light in late January after multiple allegations were reported. A third-party investigation was launched immediately, involving interviews with Ajou, witnesses, and complainants. After reviewing the findings, the league determined that Ajou violated its gender-based violence and harassment policy.

As part of the disciplinary action, the CFL has suspended Ajou for the 2026 preseason and at least six additional regular-season games. The league also outlined strict conditions for any potential reinstatement, including a minimum of 15 mandatory counselling sessions with a gender-based violence expert, a psychological assessment, and a formal meeting with Commissioner Stewart Johnston. The league stated that failure to meet any of these requirements could result in further disciplinary action.

The Roughriders organization responded firmly, stating that Ajou’s actions were inconsistent with the team’s core values. General Manager Jeremy O’Day emphasized that the team maintains high standards regarding respect, integrity, and personal conduct. He confirmed that once the allegations were brought to the team’s attention, they were immediately reported to league officials.

O’Day also addressed the context of the incident, noting that the team had been celebrating its Grey Cup championship that day. However, he made it clear that such circumstances do not excuse inappropriate behavior. He described the situation as disappointing and said the organization is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for everyone.

Despite the possibility of future reinstatement by the CFL, O’Day stated clearly that Ajou Ajou will not return to the Roughriders under any circumstances. He described his conversation with the player as difficult and unfortunate, but necessary given the seriousness of the findings.

The CFL also confirmed that it provides support to individuals affected by such incidents, including access to experienced consultants, counselling services, and safety planning resources. Meanwhile, local police in Regina stated that they had not received any formal complaints related to the case.

The incident highlights the league’s strict stance on player conduct and reinforces its ongoing efforts to promote accountability and respect both on and off the field.
