Meta Platforms announced that it will temporarily block teenagers from accessing its AI characters across all its apps globally, as the company works on an updated version designed specifically with enhanced safety features for minors.
According to Meta, teens will no longer be able to use the existing AI characters in the coming weeks, and access will be restored only once the redesigned, more secure experience is ready. The new version is expected to include more robust parental controls, giving guardians greater visibility and oversight over teen interactions.
Meta had earlier revealed some planned safety features in October—such as disabling private chats between teens and AI characters—but those tools have not yet been implemented.
The upgraded AI system for teens will follow a PG-13 style content rating, ensuring conversations remain age-appropriate. The move follows rising public and regulatory concerns about how AI chatbots interact with young users.
Meta’s decision comes amid scrutiny over reports that earlier AI guidelines allowed inappropriate responses for minors. The temporary halt aims to ensure the upcoming version meets stricter safety expectations before being reintroduced.
