Senator Marc Gold, the Government Representative in the Senate, is retiring on June 30, 2025, when he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 75. He was first appointed in November 2016, and took on the Government Representative role in January 2020 .

Gold has guided hundreds of law proposals through the Senate and helped modernize how it works. He has been part of turning the Senate into a more independent, less partisan chamber, which now focuses on careful review instead of just repeating the House of Commons 3.

He told reporters:

“It has been the privilege of my life to have served as a senator, and an honour to have been entrusted with the role of Government Representative in the Senate.”

While in office, Gold led the Senate through reforms such as hybrid sittings during COVID and new rule changes in 2024 that improved fairness and independence . He is proud that the Senate has helped improve about 25% of government bills, making them stronger for all Canadians.

In his speech, Gold said he has tried his best to honour the Senate, build trust with Canadians, and show the value of a non‑partisan legislative body. He believes the independent Senate adds “sober second thought” to Canada’s laws, guiding better decisions.

As he enters retirement, Gold shared plans to teach at McGill University’s Institute for the Study of Canada and continue playing music—he performs in a few bands and is starting a new one in Quebec. He’s also looking forward to spending more time with his family and his wife Nancy.

Gold’s retirement ends a transformational time in the Senate. He hopes that the new Government Representative will continue building on non‑partisan and independent traditions. His example highlights how one person’s leadership can help restore public trust and strengthen democratic institutions.
