A 16-year-old in Halifax has been charged with child sexual abuse and possession of child exploitation material, with his case now adjourned until January to allow the defence time to review extensive evidence.
Police allege the teen was involved with an online extremist group known as 764, which manipulates children into harming themselves and participating in sexual acts on camera. Investigators say he may have communicated with hundreds of young people worldwide.
Recently, the federal government designated 764 and several other organizations as terrorist groups in Canada. Prosecutors are reviewing how this new designation may affect the ongoing case, while emphasizing the teen is presumed innocent.
The court also revised the teen’s release conditions. He is now prohibited from using any internet-enabled devices but will have limited access to a basic cellphone to communicate with his lawyer.
Authorities warn that while cases like this are rare, the growth of digital networks makes it likely that similar cases could increase in the future. The teen is scheduled to appear in court in January to enter a plea.
