Doug Ford To Sell $28.9M Private Jet After Backlash

Doug Ford has announced that the government of Ontario will sell a recently purchased private jet after facing strong public and political criticism. The aircraft, worth $28.9 million, was originally bought to support the premier’s official travel, but the decision quickly sparked controversy.

In a public statement, Ford said that although the purchase was made with good intentions, he agrees that “now is not the right time” for such an expensive asset. He confirmed that the province is now working to sell the plane as soon as possible, in coordination with Bombardier, the manufacturer of the aircraft.

The jet, a pre-owned 2016 Bombardier Challenger 650, was intended to provide secure, flexible, and reliable travel for the premier across Canada and the United States. Officials had argued that it would help Ford meet business and political leaders more efficiently, especially while addressing trade issues such as tariffs.

However, the purchase was widely criticized by opposition leaders and the public, who questioned the need for such a costly luxury when commercial travel options are available. Critics argued that taxpayer money should be spent on more urgent public needs rather than on high-end travel arrangements.

Opposition leaders reacted strongly to the reversal. Marit Stiles said the premier changed his decision only after facing intense public backlash. John Fraser accused Ford of trying to live extravagantly at public expense, while Mike Schreiner raised concerns that the province may not recover the full cost of the jet when selling it.

Experts and critics have also pointed out that selling the aircraft quickly could result in financial losses. Since the controversy is widely known, potential buyers may try to negotiate a lower price, leaving taxpayers to bear part of the cost.

Despite the setback, Ford said he will continue focusing on building relationships with leaders across Canada and the United States to attract investment, create jobs, and support Ontario’s economy. He emphasized that the government remains committed to responsible spending and responding to public concerns.

The situation highlights the importance of public accountability in government spending. It also reflects how quickly public opinion can influence major policy decisions, especially when it involves large financial commitments.
