Canada Shines in New Delhi with Three Medals at Para Athletics

Victoria’s Nate Tucker led Canada’s charge at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships on Sunday, capturing gold in the men’s T38 1,500 metres with a new championship record of 3:57.98.

Tucker’s victory highlighted Canada’s strong finish at the event, which concluded in New Delhi. Fellow Victorian Liam Stanley finished ninth in the same race, crossing the line in 4:07.31.

Earlier, Toronto sprinter Marissa Papaconstantinou earned Canada’s first silver of the championships. She claimed second place in the women’s T64 200 metres with a time of 27.07 seconds, marking her second medal of the competition.

Wheelchair racer Austin Smeenk of Oakville, Ontario, added a bronze medal in the men’s T34 800 metres final, finishing third with a time of 1:40.50. This was his second bronze at the 2025 championships.

The trio of medals underlines Canada’s growing presence in international para athletics. Coaches and team officials praised the athletes’ performance, noting the significance of championship records and personal bests achieved during the event.

The World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi featured athletes from around the globe, competing across track and field events with a focus on inclusivity and elite performance.
