Maninder Sidhu, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, is set to visit the People’s Republic of China from April 12 to 13, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen trade relations and expand global market opportunities for Canadian businesses. The visit has been announced by Global Affairs Canada.
During his trip, Minister Sidhu will attend the China International Consumer Products Expo in Haikou, a major international event that brings together businesses and investors from around the world. Canada has been named the Guest Country of Honour at the expo, with nearly 40 Canadian brands participating. The event provides an opportunity to showcase Canadian products, particularly in sectors such as consumer goods, agri-food, and lifestyle industries.
Officials stated that the minister will meet with senior government representatives and industry leaders to promote Canadian exports and strengthen commercial partnerships. The goal of the visit is to improve market access for Canadian companies and increase trade opportunities in one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
Following the expo, Minister Sidhu will travel to Guangzhou on April 14. Guangzhou is known as a major economic hub, and the visit will focus on engaging with business leaders and investors in key sectors, including consumer products and the automotive industry. Discussions are expected to highlight investment opportunities and encourage stronger economic cooperation.
The Canadian government emphasized that diversifying trade partnerships is a key priority, especially in a changing global economic environment. By strengthening ties with international markets like China, officials aim to support job creation and long-term economic growth in Canada.
Minister Sidhu stated that the strong presence of Canadian brands at the expo reflects growing global interest in Canadian products. He expressed confidence that the visit will help open new doors for businesses and reinforce Canada’s reputation as a reliable and innovative trade partner.
The trip is part of Canada’s broader strategy to expand its global trade network and provide more opportunities for Canadian companies to compete and succeed internationally.
