Nigerian authorities have rescued 100 children who were kidnapped from a Catholic school in northern Nigeria last month. The children arrived in the capital city, Abuja, and will be handed over to officials in Niger State on Monday.
The rescued children are receiving medical check-ups and will meet their families soon, according to local reports. Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare confirmed the release.
The children were kidnapped from St Mary’s School in Papiri, Niger State, on November 21. The attack involved 303 students and 12 teachers, aged 10 to 18. Earlier, 50 children had escaped on their own. After this release, 153 students and 12 teachers are still missing.
This is one of the worst school kidnappings in Nigeria since the 2014 Chibok school abductions. In recent years, more than 1,400 students have been kidnapped across the country.
Officials say that the ongoing violence affects people of all religions, not just Christians, and the government is working to bring the remaining children home safely.
