Police in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, have charged a 29-year-old woman with second-degree murder following a fatal stabbing incident that happened over the weekend. The case has shocked local residents after emergency crews responded to reports of a violent incident inside an apartment building on MacDonald Avenue late Saturday night. Authorities confirmed that one person died after being stabbed inside the residence.
According to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, officers were called to an apartment in the 600 block of MacDonald Avenue at around 11:30 p.m. after receiving reports about a stabbing. When police and emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found a victim suffering from serious injuries. The victim was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment but was later pronounced dead.
Police later arrested 29-year-old Marina Turco in connection with the incident. She has now been formally charged with second-degree murder. Investigators said the accused and the victim were known to each other, although officials have not released further details about their relationship. Canadian law states that all accused persons are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Following the incident, there was a heavy police presence around the apartment building as investigators continued collecting evidence and examining the scene. Detectives from the Investigation Services division, along with members of the Forensic Identification Unit, were assigned to the case. Officers spent several hours securing the area and speaking with potential witnesses.
Police are also asking members of the public for help as the investigation continues. Authorities requested that anyone who may have information, security camera footage, or cellphone video recorded near the area between 11:00 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. contact investigators. Officials believe additional witness information may help investigators understand exactly what happened before the deadly stabbing occurred.
The incident has once again raised concerns about violent crime and public safety in parts of the city. Residents living near the apartment building described seeing police vehicles, forensic teams, and emergency responders working at the scene throughout the weekend. Some neighbors said they were shocked by the violence and saddened by the loss of life connected to the incident.
Second-degree murder is considered one of the most serious criminal charges under Canadian law. Unlike first-degree murder, it does not require proof that the killing was planned in advance, but it still involves an intentional act that caused death. If convicted, the accused could face a life sentence with parole eligibility determined later by the court.
Police said the investigation remains active, and more information may be released as the case develops. Authorities continue urging witnesses to cooperate with investigators as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal incident in Sault Ste. Marie.
