Flood Warning Updated As Whitson River Overflows

Post by : Sophia Matthew

A flood warning has been updated in the Greater Sudbury region after the Whitson River overflowed its banks, flooding several low-lying areas. Local authorities are urging residents in affected communities to prepare for possible worsening conditions in the coming days.

According to Conservation Sudbury, water levels in the river have risen rapidly. Monitoring stations in Val Caron and Chelmsford recorded increases of up to 70 centimetres within just 24 hours. Officials say the river has already extended beyond its banks into nearby neighbourhoods.

The rise in water levels is being driven by a combination of melting snow and expected rainfall. Warmer temperatures have accelerated snowmelt, while forecasts predict additional rain over the next two days, which could further increase water levels across the region.

Authorities warned that flooding is already occurring in some low-lying areas, with water pooling on streets and near residential zones. Residents living in flood-prone areas, particularly in Val Caron and Chelmsford, are being advised to take precautions and prepare for potential flooding.

Other rivers in the region, including the Onaping River, Vermilion River, and Wanapitei River, are also experiencing rising water levels. Smaller streams and waterways have already reached elevated levels, increasing the risk of localized flooding.

Officials noted that this year’s flooding could be worse than the spring flooding seen in 2023. The snowpack in the area currently holds about 1.5 times more water than the seasonal average, meaning more runoff is expected as temperatures continue to rise.

Residents have also been warned about safety risks near water bodies. Riverbanks are slippery, and fast-moving water poses serious danger, especially with cold temperatures. People are advised to stay away from rivers, streams, and flooded areas.

Authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely and issue further updates if conditions change. Residents are encouraged to stay alert and follow official guidance as the risk of flooding remains high in the region.
