Jake Walman’s power-play goal at 2:24 of overtime lifted the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday, snapping a three-game losing streak.
The Oilers (3-3-1) concluded their five-game road trip (2-3-0) with the win, handing the Senators their second consecutive loss at home. Walman made his season debut after missing the first six games with an undisclosed injury.
The Senators (2-4-0) staged a late rally, scoring twice in a span of 1:25 early in the third period to tie the game at 2-2, but were unable to complete the comeback. Ottawa’s goals came after a fierce puck battle along the boards, as Drake Batherson set up Dylan Cozens for a power-play score past Stuart Skinner, who made 19 saves. Just over a minute later, Thomas Chabot scored his first of the season, beating a screened Skinner to even the game.
Edmonton opened the scoring late in the first period with a power-play goal. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fed Connor McDavid, who fired a quick shot from the top of the faceoff circle for his first goal of the season.
The Oilers extended their lead to 2-0 just 49 seconds into the second period following a Senators turnover. Leon Draisaitl skated in and set up rookie Isaac Howard, who scored his first career NHL goal past Linus Ullmark, who finished with 22 saves.
Senators: Ottawa lacked intensity through the first 40 minutes and only sparked a comeback in the third period.
Oilers: After giving up two quick goals in the third, Edmonton held on and forced overtime to secure the win.
