Sunil Grover, beloved comedian and actor recognized for his role in The Kapil Sharma Show, encountered significant personal challenges prior to his breakthrough in 2013. In a recent conversation, his co-star Upasana Singh, who portrayed “Bua” on the show, shared insights into Grover's troubled journey marked by depression and the risk of being let go from the show.
Sunil Grover's Struggle with Mental Health
Upasana Singh recounted that when the show launched, Sunil was grappling with serious issues. “During the show's beginning, he was not in a good place. He confided in me that he had been hospitalized due to depression, and work was scarce,” she stated.
She remarked on Grover's impressive transformation since that time. “When he visited my house with Kapil, I barely recognized him, as he wasn't active back then. But his journey has been remarkable, and I cherish our friendship today,” she noted, praising his tenacity and skill.
Concerns Over Sunil Grover's Performance
Upasana also recalled instances when executives contemplated Sunil's removal from the show. “Initially, he spoke rather slowly. The creative team suggested letting him go, thinking he couldn’t keep pace with the ensemble,” she shared.
She ardently defended him, affirming that Grover was a gifted actor in need of time to adapt. “I insisted he was very talented and deserved the chance to prove himself. I’m thrilled they listened, considering his current success,” she expressed.
The Fallout Between Grover and Kapil Sharma
Sunil Grover and Kapil Sharma collaborated on numerous successful comedy programs, including Comedy Nights With Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show. However, their professional rapport deteriorated in 2017 after a reported incident on a Melbourne flight, which allegedly resulted in Grover’s departure from the show.
Subsequently, Kapil acknowledged there were issues but maintained that accounts were exaggerated. “It was claimed that I threw a shoe at Sunil or acted out of line. Those narratives were overblown,” he commented.
Apologies and Reunion
Following their dispute, Kapil publicly expressed his regret on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“Paji Sunil Grover, I apologize if I inadvertently hurt you. You know how much I care for you. I am also disappointed. Love and best wishes always :)”
Sunil replied with a poignant yet assertive message:
“Bha ji! Yes, you truly did hurt me. Collaborating with you has been a great learning journey. Just a piece of advice—begin respecting people, not just animals... show some gratitude for their existence.”
Years later, the pair reconnected for The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, a moment that thrilled fans longing for their reunion on screen.
Sunil Grover’s narrative remains a powerful testament to resilience and talent triumphing against adversity within the entertainment realm.
