Government Confirms TikTok Ban in India Still Remains in Place

Post by : Mina Carter

Recently, some internet users in India claimed that they were able to open TikTok’s official website. These claims spread quickly, creating confusion over whether the app was coming back to the country. However, officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology made it clear that the ban on TikTok has not been lifted. The government strongly stated that no official order has been issued to unblock TikTok and that such news is “false and misleading.”

TikTok’s Journey in India Before the Ban

TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, was extremely popular in India before the ban. The short-video platform became a household name, especially among young people. By January 2020, it had nearly 200 million users in the country. Millions of creators used TikTok to showcase their talents in dance, comedy, music, education, and fashion. For many, TikTok was not just entertainment—it was also a career opportunity, as some users gained fame and earned income through brand promotions and live sessions.

The app’s sudden disappearance in mid-2020 left a large gap in India’s digital entertainment space. Several Indian apps, such as Chingari, Moj, and Josh, along with global platforms like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, tried to fill the void.

Why the App Was Banned in 2020

On 29 June 2020, the Indian government announced a ban on 59 mobile applications, mostly Chinese-owned. The list included TikTok, UC Browser, WeChat, and several other popular apps. Officials said the apps were banned because they posed a risk to India’s sovereignty, security, and public order.

At that time, tensions between India and China were very high due to the Galwan Valley clashes in eastern Ladakh, where soldiers from both countries had violent confrontations. The clashes deeply affected relations between the two nations and added urgency to security concerns.

Data Privacy Concerns and Security Issues

Officials explained that many of these Chinese apps were collecting sensitive data from Indian users. Reports suggested that TikTok and other apps were able to access location information, contacts, and personal files, which were then transferred to servers outside India, mainly in China.

One IT ministry official at the time said that these apps had “malpractices” and were not safe for Indian users. Beauty apps and selfie camera apps were also flagged for having inappropriate or harmful content. There were also global worries about Chinese companies building backdoors in their software and hardware, which could be used for spying. Several countries, including the United States, raised similar concerns about Chinese technology, especially 5G equipment.

Government’s Stand on the Ban

The decision to ban TikTok and other apps was not taken lightly. It involved high-level discussions. The Union Home Minister approved the recommendation, and the IT ministry issued the order officially. Since then, TikTok has not been available on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store in India.

Even though some users claim they can still open TikTok’s homepage on the web, this does not mean the app is back. Officials have confirmed that there is no plan to lift the ban right now. The government is standing firm on its decision, keeping in mind the safety and security of Indian citizens.

Impact on Indian Users and Creators

The ban had a major impact on digital creators across India. Many TikTok stars had built careers with millions of followers. When the app disappeared, they had to shift to other platforms like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and homegrown Indian apps. Some creators managed to rebuild their audience, while others lost their popularity and income.

At the same time, the ban gave a boost to Indian startups that launched short-video platforms. Apps like Moj, Chingari, and Josh quickly grew in popularity, offering creators new spaces to share their videos. However, TikTok’s unique features and massive community have not been fully replaced. For many users, TikTok’s absence is still felt.

Why TikTok’s Return Looks Difficult

For TikTok to return to India, the company would need to follow Indian data protection laws and convince the government that user information will be safe. Given the current tense relations between India and China, this seems unlikely in the near future.

Officials have also made it clear that the safety of Indian data comes first. Unless these concerns are resolved, TikTok’s comeback will remain only a rumour.

The excitement around TikTok’s website being accessible in India has once again brought the app into headlines. But government officials have clearly said that the ban is still active, and no official order has been made to reverse it.

The decision in 2020 was based on national security and data privacy concerns, and the government is standing by that choice. While millions of Indian users miss TikTok, the chances of its return remain uncertain.
