Actor Sweta Keswani, who has been living and working in the United States for more than a decade, recently shared her candid opinion about Priyanka Chopra’s influence on South Asian representation in Hollywood. While acknowledging Priyanka’s success and international fame, Sweta said she feels the global star has primarily focused on her own career rather than helping other South Asian talents break through.
In an interview, Sweta drew a direct comparison between Priyanka Chopra and Mindy Kaling, highlighting the different ways both women have contributed to the visibility of South Asians in Hollywood. “I think it’s incredible what she’s (Priyanka) accomplished — there’s no two ways about that,” Sweta said. “But she’s not Mindy Kaling. She’s not helping other South Asians. She’s only helping herself, to be very honest. She’s all about herself.”
Sweta further emphasized that Mindy Kaling’s contribution stands out because of her efforts to create opportunities for others. “What Mindy Kaling does is amazing because she’s actually writing, producing, and helping other South Asians to break through in the business, which is already so difficult for women of colour,” she said.
The actor pointed out that even within the entertainment industry, cliques and exclusivity exist, often preventing lesser-known talents from finding their space. “There are cliques everywhere. Certain people prefer to work within their own circles, and unfortunately, I’m not part of any South Asian clique,” she added, suggesting that the industry’s social circles can be restrictive.
Sweta Keswani’s Journey In The US
Sweta Keswani gained immense popularity in Indian television through shows such as Baa Bahu Aur Baby, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, and Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand. After moving to the US, she gradually established herself in American television, appearing in shows like New Amsterdam, The Blacklist, Roar, As They Made Us, Nos4A2, and The Beanie Bubble. She is also set to appear in an episode of Law & Order: SVU, expanding her portfolio in international entertainment.
Priyanka Chopra’s Hollywood Career
Priyanka Chopra, one of India’s most recognized exports to Hollywood, began her American journey with the TV thriller Quantico, where she played the lead role of FBI agent Alex Parrish. The success of the show opened several doors for her, leading to film roles in Baywatch, Isn’t It Romantic, The Matrix Resurrections, and Love Again.
Her latest breakthrough came with the Amazon Prime Video series Citadel, in which she starred alongside Richard Madden. The series not only elevated her global profile but also positioned her as a leading South Asian face in international streaming content. Priyanka will next be seen in Citadel Season 2 and in Heads of State opposite John Cena and Idris Elba.
She is also collaborating with acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli for his next big international project tentatively titled GlobeTrotter, co-starring Mahesh Babu. Another upcoming venture, The Bluff, will see her portraying a 19th-century Caribbean pirate alongside Karl Urban.
A Larger Debate on Representation
Sweta Keswani’s comments have reignited the discussion about how global South Asian stars use their influence. While Priyanka has often spoken about promoting diversity and inclusion, Sweta’s remarks raise the question of whether more established actors can do more to uplift emerging South Asian talent in global entertainment.
Both actors, however, represent different approaches — Mindy Kaling as a creator and producer fostering diversity, and Priyanka Chopra as a trailblazer who broke barriers for Indian actors in Hollywood. Sweta’s statement adds another perspective to this evolving dialogue about representation, inclusivity, and community support within the entertainment world.
