Fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty have been waiting with excitement for the upcoming movie adaptation, especially after it was announced shortly following the Season 3 finale. Many hoped the film would be released as a surprise Christmas treat, but creator Jenny Han has now clarified that such expectations are not realistic.
Jenny confirmed that she has completed the movie script, but filming has not started. She explained that while the writing stage is done, production remains at a standstill, making a 2025 holiday release impossible.
Season 3 of The Summer I Turned Pretty premiered in July, and the post-production work continued right up until its release. Due to the tight schedule, Jenny and the team had no window to shift focus towards planning or shooting a full-length film. The priority had been finishing the season, leaving the movie to move forward only after that work was complete.
The upcoming film will continue from the Season 3 storyline, exploring the emotional dynamics between Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah. Jenny has hinted that Belly, portrayed by Lola Tung, will face a significant turning point in her life, continuing her journey with new challenges and choices.
Despite the buzz surrounding the movie, most details are still unknown — even to the cast. Lola Tung revealed earlier that she has not yet seen the script, though she knows Jenny has completed a draft. Christopher Briney joked that he is glad he is not involved in writing, as he might include “some dumb things.”
The film is confirmed to be moving ahead, but fans should not expect it to be rushed. Jenny Han is taking her time to shape the next chapter at Cousins Beach, ensuring the movie reflects the depth and sensitivity that made the series a hit.
