Ratna Pathak Shah Pens a Tender Farewell to Satish Shah

Post by : Mina Carter

Veteran actor Ratna Pathak Shah has written a moving remembrance of her long-time friend and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai co-star Satish Shah, who died on October 25 after a sudden cardiac arrest. In her piece she reflects on his wit, warmth and the ordinary moment that became their final shared memory.

The Last Message That Lingers

Writing for The Indian Express, Ratna describes the last text she received from Satish Shah on October 25 at 12:57 PM: a cheeky line about being mistaken for an adult because of his age. She laughed at his familiar humour and replied at 2:14 PM with a playful retort. Later, at 3:49 PM, producer JD Majethia rang with the heartbreaking news that Satishbhai had passed away.

Ratna admits her first reaction was disbelief, thinking the call was a cruel prank. As the reality settled, she wrote of the surreal feeling that a man who embraced life and met its knocks with a smile was suddenly gone.

She also noted that many friends had received similarly bright messages from Satish earlier that day, which only intensified the shock.

A Community in Mourning

Members of the Sarabhai vs Sarabhai family — including Sumeet Raghavan, Rajesh Kumar and JD Majethia — were stunned when they learned of his death. Ratna recounts how their group chat swelled with disbelief as colleagues struggled to accept the loss of a colleague who had been lively and present until that very afternoon.

Known for impeccable timing and a generous spirit, Satish reportedly remained cheerful even when unwell. Ratna praises his rare gift for lifting others’ spirits, saying his humour often outshone his own troubles.

On the Cause of Death

Although earlier reports mentioned kidney issues, Rajesh Kumar later confirmed that Satish suffered a cardiac arrest at his Mumbai residence. He is said to have collapsed during lunch and was taken to hospital, where doctors were unable to revive him.

Satish Shah was 74. Close family and colleagues attended his funeral, offering memories of a performer they remembered as warm, funny and gracious.

Indravadan Sarabhai’s Enduring Charm

Satish Shah’s Indravadan Sarabhai became one of television’s most enduring figures, his chemistry with Ratna Pathak Shah’s Maya forming the emotional and comic centre of the show. The pair’s understated banter and finely tuned rhythms helped reshape Indian sitcom storytelling, and scenes from the series continue to circulate online.

Ratna calls working alongside Satish a creative delight, praising his instinctive approach to comedy and his habit of lifting scenes without seeking attention.

Tributes from Friends and Fans

Messages of condolence poured in across the industry as news spread. JD Majethia remembered Satish as the same witty, warm figure off-screen as he was on, promising that his laughter would be long remembered.

Sumeet Raghavan described the loss as that of the heart of their Sarabhai family, while colleagues including Boman Irani, Paresh Rawal and Anupam Kher saluted him as a gentleman and a master of subtle comedy.

A Career Filled With Laughter

Across more than four decades and over 200 films, Satish Shah’s work — from Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi to Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, and roles in films like Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! — left a wide and affectionate legacy.

Ratna closes her tribute by celebrating his ability to turn hardship into humour and to make life brighter for those around him, calling that talent a rare blessing she and many others will sorely miss.

As colleagues and fans revisit classic clips and memorable lines, Satish Shah’s laughter endures on screens and in memory, a reminder of the joy he brought into countless homes.
