The much-awaited film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring Rajinikanth, will hit theatres on 14 August. Even though it is releasing at the same time as War 2, the film has done very well in advance bookings. Fans are excited, and the pre-sales numbers show that the film is expected to have a big opening weekend.
Advance Booking and Ticket Sales
According to reports, Coolie has already crossed the ₹100 crore mark for its opening weekend through advance bookings. On its first day of ticket sales, more than 12 lakh tickets were sold across India. Most tickets were for the Tamil version, which sold over 10 lakh tickets, followed by 1 lakh tickets for the Telugu version.
In terms of revenue, the film collected:
₹11.97 crore in Tamil Nadu
₹1.46 crore in Andhra Pradesh
₹1.69 crore in Telangana
₹6.85 crore in Karnataka
Overall, the film earned about ₹27.01 crore in India as of 11 AM on the first day.
Overseas Response
The film has also done very well in overseas markets. Pre-sales abroad show a ₹60 crore gross for the opening weekend, with ₹45 crore collected on the opening day alone. Combining India and overseas collections, the total pre-sale revenue is already over ₹110 crore, with ₹80 crore earned just on the first day. Fans are still buying tickets, so the final number could be even higher.
Record-Breaking Numbers in the US
In the United States, Coolie has already become the first Tamil film to make over $2 million in premiere pre-sales. Fans are eager to see if Rajinikanth’s new film can beat the opening collections of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s previous hit, Leo, which starred Vijay and made ₹142.70 crore worldwide on its opening weekend.
About the Film
Coolie is an action drama featuring a large ensemble cast including Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, and Aamir Khan. The story has been kept mostly secret, but the British Board of Film Classification describes it as: “A mysterious man takes a stand against a corrupt syndicate exploiting and abusing the workers of a port town in this action drama.”
Fans are eagerly waiting for the 14 August release, and with such strong advance bookings, Coolie is expected to be a major hit at the box office.
