In a thrilling start to the NHL season, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the New York Rangers 3-0 on Tuesday night. Justin Brazeau scored twice, and rookie goaltender Arturs Silovs stopped all 25 shots he faced for his first regular-season shutout.
New Era for Both Teams
The game featured debuts for both teams’ new faces behind the bench. Dan Muse won his first game as Penguins head coach, while Mike Sullivan, his predecessor in Pittsburgh, coached the Rangers in his first game with New York. Sullivan led Pittsburgh to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 2016 and 2017 before departing in April.
Brazeau and Silovs Shine in Penguins Debut
Brazeau, who joined Pittsburgh as a free agent, and Silovs, acquired from Vancouver, made immediate impacts. Evgeni Malkin, starting his 20th NHL season, assisted on Brazeau's opening goal. After winning an offensive zone faceoff, Malkin set up Brazeau, who scored a backhander past Igor Shesterkin with just 32 seconds left in the first period.
Silovs showed composure throughout, making key saves including blocking a shot from Alexis Lafrenière during an early Rangers power play. Brazeau later added an empty-net goal with 2:12 remaining, and Blake Lizotte sealed the 3-0 victory 20 seconds later.
Rangers Struggle to Find Momentum
New Rangers captain J.T. Miller and linemate Mika Zibanejad saw action in prominent roles. Zibanejad led the team with seven shots on goal but failed to convert on key opportunities.
Historic Milestone for Penguins Trio
The victory also marked a historic moment for Pittsburgh veterans Malkin, Sidney Crosby, and Kris Letang. The trio became the first in the four major North American men’s professional sports leagues to play 20 seasons together with the same team, solidifying their legacy in NHL history.
