Paraguay Reaffirms Diplomatic Support for Taiwan Amid Chinese Pressure

Post by : Shakul

In a notable gesture of solidarity, Paraguay has reaffirmed its diplomatic relationship with Taiwan amid escalating pressure from China to cut ties. During his visit to Taipei on Friday, Paraguayan President Santiago Peña reiterated his nation's unwavering support for Taiwan while engaging with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te at several diplomatic functions. This visit took place just a day after China publicly urged Paraguay to abandon its formal ties with Taiwan in favor of recognizing Beijing.

Paraguay stands as the only South American nation that officially recognizes Taiwan, being one of just 12 countries worldwide that maintains diplomatic relations with the self-ruled island. China, considering Taiwan a part of its territory, has ramped up its efforts to isolate Taiwan on the global stage by convincing its allies to recognize Beijing instead. Along with this diplomatic pressure, China has also intensified military activities around Taiwan, significantly heightening regional tensions.

During a ceremony honoring military traditions outside the Taiwanese presidential office, President Peña emphasized Paraguay's commitment to its friendship and strategic partnership with Taiwan. He highlighted the shared democratic values of freedom and human rights as pivotal in fortifying their relationship. Peña underlined Paraguay's dedication to advocating for Taiwan's international presence and fostering closer bilateral cooperation ahead.

In response, President Lai Ching-te expressed gratitude towards Paraguay for its steadfast support during a time of increasing international pressure from China. Lai noted that the friendship between the two nations strengthens through mutual political trust and collaborative projects. Subsequently, both leaders signed several bilateral agreements, including a memorandum for investment in an artificial intelligence computing center.

This reaffirmation of diplomatic ties follows a public call from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, urging Paraguay to join the “right side of history” by severing relations with Taiwan. Chinese officials reiterated that the “One China” principle is a fundamental aspect of international relations, citing that over 180 countries currently recognize Beijing over Taipei. However, Paraguay has steadfastly continued to advocate for Taiwan's international role.

During their discussions, President Peña asserted that the citizens of Taiwan should determine their own path based on democratic values and fairness. He remarked that excluding Taiwan from vital international organizations like the United Nations weakens global institutions. His comments reflect Paraguay’s unwavering backing of Taiwan’s active participation in international affairs, despite opposition from Beijing.

The growing diplomatic tensions surrounding Taiwan highlight China's ongoing efforts to diminish Taipei's international alliances. In recent years, Taiwan has lost several partners, including Honduras in 2023, which shifted its allegiance to China. Nevertheless, Paraguay's recent reaffirmation underscores that some countries are committed to maintaining strong ties with Taiwan, grounded in mutual political values, economic collaboration, and strategic partnerships.
