The New Democratic Party (NDP) is urging Canadians interested in shaping its next federal leader to buy or renew party memberships before the Jan. 28, 2026 deadline, as that is the last day people will be eligible to vote in the party’s leadership contest. The deadline applies both to new memberships and to renewals for existing members who want to ensure their voting rights in the leadership election later this year.
The leadership race, which was triggered by former leader Jagmeet Singh’s announcement that he would step down following the 2025 federal election, is currently underway with a competitive field of candidates seeking to succeed him. Interim leader Don Davies, who took over in May 2025, continues to lead the party while the leadership contest proceeds.
According to the NDP’s official information, party members must be in good standing by Jan. 28 in order to cast a ballot using the preferential voting system that will be used to choose the new leader. Members will rank their preferred candidates, and ballots will be counted in multiple rounds until one candidate receives more than 50 per cent support.
The leadership vote is scheduled to conclude at the NDP’s national convention in Winnipeg from March 27–29, 2026, with the new leader expected to be formally announced on March 29. The national convention will bring together delegates, supporters and party members from across the country for debates, policy discussions and the leadership vote itself.
Candidates in the race have been focused on signing up members and expanding their support as the membership deadline draws near, often emphasising outreach to younger voters and grassroots activists. The membership deadline reflects a rule change from past leadership races requiring that members join at least 60 days before voting, an earlier cutoff than in previous contests.
As the clock ticks down, party officials are encouraging anyone considering participating in the democratic process to act quickly to secure membership and have a voice in choosing the next leader of the New Democratic Party.
