Meta Voices Concerns Over Malaysia's Social Media Restrictions for Youth

Meta Platforms has advised the Malaysian government to take a more nuanced stance regarding its potential restrictions on social media access for those under 16. The company warned that a blanket ban could inadvertently lead to young individuals gravitating towards less secure online spaces.

During a discussion in Kuala Lumpur, Clara Koh, Meta’s public policy director for Southeast Asia, pointed out that broad restrictions have often proven ineffective in the past. She described a typical outcome known as the “migration effect,” where users move to less regulated online environments that lack sufficient safety protocols.

Earlier, Malaysian authorities revealed plans to collaborate with social media companies to set age restrictions by mid-2026, aiming to tackle issues around online safety and the risk of exposure to harmful content for young users.

However, Meta cautioned that outright bans might cause more issues than they solve. Drawing from global insights, including cases from Australia, the company noted that enforcement challenges and inconsistent platform coverage could diminish the effectiveness of such regulations.

Koh advocated for Malaysia to concentrate on establishing a well-rounded regulatory framework that ensures uniform standards across platforms. She emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts within the industry to foster safer and age-suitable online experiences for youth.

Additionally, Meta highlighted the positive aspects of social media in youth development, providing avenues for connectivity, personal expression, and community involvement. An all-encompassing ban could result in feelings of isolation among teens, a phenomenon observed in nations with stringent regulations.

Meta also proposed that parental involvement should be integral to digital regulation, advocating for tools and policies that empower families to oversee their children's online interactions. The company reaffirmed its dedication to partnering with Malaysian officials to create a secure and inclusive digital landscape.
