The Malaysian Meteorological Department has announced a severe thunderstorm alert encompassing vast areas of Malaysia, including the Klang Valley, Kuala Lumpur, and multiple states across both Peninsular and East Malaysia. Residents are advised to brace for heavy rainfall, strong winds, and lightning activity expected to persist throughout the afternoon.
This alert was officially issued at 3:00 PM local time on Tuesday and will remain valid until at least 6:00 PM. Meteorologists have indicated that dangerous weather patterns are unfolding in several areas, with storms predicted to escalate this evening.
In the Klang Valley, districts such as Petaling, Gombak, Hulu Selangor, Kuala Selangor, and Sabak Bernam are under alert. Residents in Kuala Lumpur and adjacent regions should stay indoors when possible and refrain from unnecessary travel during heavy rain and lightning.
The northern states of Peninsular Malaysia are also experiencing the impact of this weather warning. Regions like Perlis, Kedah, Penang, and Perak are expected to face thunderstorms with strong winds and significant rain. Authorities caution that sudden bursts of rain could reduce visibility and heighten the risk of flash floods in low-lying urban areas.
On the east coast, districts in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang are included in the alert zone. Officials have warned that mountainous and coastal areas could encounter unstable weather, with heavy rainfall possibly continuing for several hours based on local storm development.
The alert has also been extended to East Malaysia, including regions in Sarawak, Sabah, and Labuan, where widespread thunderstorms are anticipated in various districts, particularly in coastal and interior areas with significant atmospheric instability.
According to MetMalaysia, these thunderstorm warnings are enacted when rainfall intensity is projected to surpass 20 millimeters per hour for over an hour. Officials noted that such alerts can last for up to six hours depending on changing weather patterns and storm movement.
Authorities have urged the public to remain informed through official weather updates and take necessary precautions during the warning period. Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items, stay indoors during storms, avoid large trees and electrical infrastructure, and exercise caution while driving on flooded or affected roads.
Weather analysts have pointed out that the current storm system is indicative of increasingly unstable seasonal weather trends in parts of Southeast Asia. Experts are actively monitoring rainfall intensity and storm development as authorities remain vigilant for potential flooding and weather-related disruptions.
