Jaguars Edge Chiefs as Mahomes’ 99-Yard Pick Shifts Momentum

Post by : Mina Carter

Jacksonville Jaguars stunned the Kansas City Chiefs 31-28 on Monday night, capitalizing on Patrick Mahomes’ 99-yard interception and a string of costly penalties in a dramatic Week 5 clash at TIAA Bank Field.

Mahomes appeared set to give the Chiefs a 21-14 lead late in the third quarter, but linebacker Devin Lloyd intercepted a pass intended for JuJu Smith-Schuster at the goal line. Lloyd sprinted down the sideline for a 99-yard touchdown — the longest interception return by a linebacker in NFL history — marking a critical 14-point swing that shifted momentum firmly to Jacksonville.

Kansas City’s mistakes didn’t stop there. The Chiefs were flagged 13 times for 109 yards, including four penalties in the final 1:45, which disrupted their final drive. Notable infractions included Harrison Butker’s kickoff out of bounds, Chamarri Conner’s pass interference in the end zone, and Jack Cochrane’s holding call that negated a 34-yard return.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid addressed the errors postgame, saying, “Whether I agree with them or don’t agree with them, it doesn’t matter. They called them. And so you have that many penalties, you give up field position… It’s the score that matters, and we’ve got to take care of business there.”

Despite these setbacks, Kansas City briefly regained momentum by tying the game at 21 with two quick scores. However, Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence capitalized on the Chiefs’ final mistakes with a wacky touchdown run, ultimately sealing the win.

The Jaguars, now 4-1, also disputed a few officiating decisions, including a waived-off pass interference call on Travis Kelce’s early touchdown and an uncalled foul on Parker Washington before an interception.

The loss drops Kansas City to 2-3, highlighting how execution errors can overshadow statistical dominance. The Chiefs will look to rebound in their next matchup as penalties and turnovers remain a concern.

Kansas City’s focus will shift to correcting penalties and defensive lapses before facing its Week 6 opponent, aiming to regain momentum after a tough road loss.
