Kiran Rao on Newcomers, Nepotism, and the Evolution of Stardom in Bollywood

Director Kiran Rao has expressed her inclination towards collaborating with newcomers in the Hindi film landscape, pointing to the escalating expenses tied to star entourages as a significant factor. Since launching three new talents—Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastava—in her film Laapataa Ladies last year, Rao highlighted how fresh faces arrive without the encumbrances often associated with experienced star kids.

“They naturally harmonize with the ethos of an independent production. My films emphasize equality among all crew members, prioritize reasonable working hours, and aim for minimal waste. Newcomers tend to adapt more seamlessly in such settings,” she remarked.

When contrasting her experience with outsiders to that of star kids like Aamir Khan’s son Junaid, she noted public perception differences. “A ‘nepo kid’ carries a weight of privilege. Although their paths can be challenging, they endure constant expectations and judgment. Fresh actors often allow audiences to connect with them on their journey, appreciating both their strengths and weaknesses,” she commented.

Questioned whether outsiders find it easier than star kids, Rao concurred. “Today, audiences seek to discover talent in an organic way. While there’s curiosity about stars and their children, nurturing a new star requires accountability. Outsiders benefit from being judged solely on their performances,” she stated.

Rao also addressed a broader transformation within the industry: “The old star system is diminishing. Modern stardom emerges from social media followings, digital series, films, or even through directors. Audiences are uncovering talent through various avenues, fundamentally reshaping the concept of stardom.”
