Kevin Federline Details Tense Relationship with Britney Spears

Kevin Federline, the ex-husband of pop star Britney Spears, has revealed new details about their troubled relationship in his upcoming memoir You Thought You Knew. Federline, who was once Spears’s backup dancer, paints a picture of Spears as an unstable wife and mother, and says he remains concerned for her wellbeing.

The memoir, set to be published on Tuesday, has already drawn strong criticism from Spears. She accused Federline of attempting to profit from his past association with her and described the book as “extremely hurtful and exhausting.” Spears suggested the book is likely to sell better than her own memoir, The Woman in Me, in which she had defended her actions and shared her side of the story.

In the memoir, Federline makes serious allegations about Spears’s behaviour. He claims that Spears engaged in unhealthy habits as a mother, including drinking while pregnant and using cocaine when their two sons were still breastfeeding. Spears has previously denied any substance abuse issues.

Federline also recounts moments when their teenage sons, Preston, 20, and Jayden, 19, were reportedly fearful of Spears. He writes: “They would awaken sometimes at night to find her standing silently in the doorway, watching them sleep – 'Oh, you’re awake?' – with a knife in her hand. Then she'd turn around and pad off without explanation.”

Expressing concern for Spears, Federline adds: “The truth is, this situation with Britney feels like it’s racing toward something irreversible. From where I sit, the clock is ticking, and we’re getting close to the 11th hour.” He also shared that he had supported a conservatorship during her struggles, under which many aspects of Spears’s life were controlled by others for years. He notes that he could “never fully get behind” the Free Britney movement.

Federline and Spears’s relationship began in the summer of 2004, as Spears’s initial commercial success began to slow. They married a few months later and quickly had two sons, Preston and Jayden. Spears filed for divorce in 2006, and it was finalized in 2007.

Following the divorce, the couple engaged in public custody battles, ultimately resulting in Federline receiving sole custody of their sons. Spears’s behaviour during this period, which included shaving her head and striking a photographer’s car with an umbrella, became highly publicized. These incidents raised concerns about her mental health, leading to temporary hospitalizations and the establishment of a conservatorship in 2008. This arrangement, which became permanent later that year, remained in place until 2021. Spears regained control over her personal and financial affairs and, eventually, custody rights over her children.

In response to Federline’s memoir, Spears has strongly defended herself. She called the allegations “extremely hurtful and exhausting” and criticized the timing of the book, suggesting that it follows the end of child support payments. Spears highlighted her dedication to her children, Sean Preston and Jayden James, emphasizing that her focus remains on their wellbeing amid the media attention.

A spokesperson for Spears told US media: “With news from Kevin’s book breaking, once again he and others are profiting off her. All she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and their well-being during this sensationalism. She detailed her journey in her memoir.”

In The Woman in Me, Spears had previously accused Federline of trying to convince the public that she was “completely out of control.” She also defended her relationship with her sons, writing on social media in October: “I have always pleaded and screamed to have a life with my boys. Relationships with teenage boys is complex.”

The memoir promises to bring renewed attention to Spears’s personal life, sparking debate over her past actions, her conservatorship, and her relationship with her children. As the book’s release approaches, the public can expect more heated discussions around the challenges and controversies surrounding one of pop music’s most famous figures.
