At least five people, including a journalist, were killed after Israeli airstrikes targeted areas in southern Lebanon, escalating tensions in an already fragile region. According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, the first strike hit a vehicle in the village of at-Tiri, killing two individuals. The Israel Defense Forces stated that the vehicles were linked to activities associated with Hezbollah, suggesting the targets were part of militant operations.
Hours later, a second airstrike hit a building in the same area where journalists had gathered to report on the earlier attack. Among those present was journalist Amal Khalil, who was initially reported injured and trapped under debris. She was later confirmed dead, marking a tragic loss for the media community. Another journalist, Zeinab Faraj, was critically injured and taken to a nearby hospital, where she remains under medical care.
Lebanon’s health ministry accused Israel of deliberately targeting the building where journalists had taken shelter, calling the strikes a direct threat to press freedom and civilian safety. Rescue operations were also delayed due to continued airstrikes in the area, making it difficult for emergency teams to reach those trapped under the rubble.
Israeli authorities, however, maintained that the strikes were aimed at Hezbollah-linked infrastructure and not civilians or journalists. The military emphasized that its operations were part of ongoing efforts to counter security threats along the border.
The incident has intensified fears about the risks faced by journalists reporting in active conflict zones. It also adds to the rising tensions between Israel and Lebanon, where cross-border clashes have become more frequent in recent months.
