Iraq’s President Abdul Latif Rashid addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, urging the world to treat human rights, justice, and international law equally. He said that the situation in Palestine shows how the world is selective and often ignores human suffering.
Rashid highlighted the harsh conditions faced by Palestinians, including killing, starvation, displacement, and destruction of homes and infrastructure. He called this situation inhumane and said it is a disgrace for humanity. He demanded that the United Nations act to end the suffering and uphold the rule of law.
Calls for International Action
The Iraqi president criticized Israel’s attacks against several countries, including Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, and Iran. He urged the international community to take urgent action to find a just and comprehensive solution for Palestine, in line with UN resolutions.
Rashid emphasized that the creation of an independent State of Palestine is the only way to achieve stability and security in the Middle East and the world. He also called for decisive measures against settlements and land annexation that destroy the hope of Palestinians for a liveable state.
He welcomed the international recognition of Palestine by many countries, saying it strengthens the push for justice.
Iraq’s Example Against Terrorism
Rashid said Iraq has successfully fought terrorism and is now working to empower its 46 million citizens. He stressed that terrorism should be fought in all forms, without exception.
He also highlighted the need to hold accountable those who support terrorism, including groups or countries providing funding, weapons, shelter, or media support.
Iraq as a Model for Democracy and Cooperation
Rashid described Iraq as a beacon of hope for the world. He noted the sacrifices of the Iraqi people in building coexistence and pluralism, in contrast to the repressive rule of Saddam Hussein.
He emphasized the importance of free and fair elections, working with the judiciary, and ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens to participate in government.
Promoting Regional Unity
The president highlighted Iraq’s efforts to strengthen relations with neighboring countries, including Kuwait, which Iraq invaded in 1990. He said Iraq seeks partnership, not sympathy, to heal the land, protect resources, empower youth, and maintain unity in the region.
Rashid called on the world to end war, bloodshed, and grief in the Middle East and to create a path for peace, justice, and cooperation.
Message to the World
Rashid concluded by urging the United Nations and the international community to take meaningful action. He asked whether the world will uphold human rights and justice, or ignore them and allow violence and chaos to continue.
He said: “The peoples of the world, especially in the Middle East, look to the UN as the last path for peace. Will it act, or will it look the other way?”
The speech was a strong reminder that peace and justice require global attention, unity, and action, and that Palestinians must not be left behind in the pursuit of human rights.
