Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Minister of Iran, arrived in Islamabad late Friday to hold important discussions with Pakistan’s leadership. His visit comes at a critical time as efforts increase to restart dialogue between United States and Iran, with Pakistan positioning itself as a key mediator in the process.
Araghchi is accompanied by a small delegation, including Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei. During his visit, he is expected to meet Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Asim Munir. These high-level meetings aim to discuss regional tensions and explore ways to move forward with peace efforts.
According to officials, US representatives are also expected to arrive in Islamabad for possible direct talks with the Iranian delegation. The US side may include special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, signalling that both Washington and Tehran are open to holding a second round of negotiations. These talks are seen as crucial after earlier discussions did not produce clear outcomes, especially on Iran’s nuclear programme.
Pakistan has been actively trying to bring both sides back to the negotiating table. Officials say Islamabad is playing a constructive role by providing a neutral platform for dialogue. The visit highlights Pakistan’s growing importance in regional diplomacy, particularly in efforts to reduce tensions in West Asia.
The discussions are expected to build on earlier talks held on April 11, which were led by US Vice President JD Vance. However, those talks ended without a clear agreement, especially on key issues like nuclear fuel enrichment. This new round of engagement is being seen as an opportunity to revive momentum and work towards a ceasefire and long-term stability.
Before arriving in Pakistan, Araghchi stated that his broader diplomatic tour also includes visits to other countries to coordinate on regional developments. He emphasised the importance of working closely with neighbouring countries and partners to maintain peace and stability.
Overall, the visit marks a significant diplomatic effort as multiple countries push to restart US-Iran dialogue. If successful, the talks in Islamabad could help ease tensions and open the door for further negotiations in the region.
