Grammy-nominated R&B artist Ty Dolla $ign has officially entered what he calls his “Tycoon season.” After five years without a solo studio album, the singer and producer has released his fifth full-length project, Tycoon, a confident and ambitious statement of where he stands today in music and business.
Speaking about the album’s title, Ty explained that “Tycoon” represents his current mindset — one of mastery and elevation. “It’s like being at the top of your game,” he said. “Not only have I done all the stuff you could do in artistry, but there’s still more to do.”
The essence of ‘Tycoon’
The album stays true to Ty Dolla $ign’s signature sound — a smooth, seductive fusion of R&B, hip-hop, and soul, paired with lyrics about love, desire, and emotional complexity. Known for crafting irresistible melodies and infectious hooks, Ty once again delivers a project filled with both confidence and introspection.
“Tycoon” features an impressive list of collaborators, including Quavo, Juicy J, 2 Chainz, Tyga, Travis Scott, Chloë Bailey, Kodak Black, and longtime friend YG. Their joint track, “SMILE BODY PRETTY FACE,” came together near the end of the album’s production. “When we started messing with the beat, I was like, ‘This has got to be YG,’” Ty recalled.
The lead single, “All In,” adds a romantic twist to the project. Over a sample of Wayne Wonder’s 2002 hit “No Letting Go,” Ty sings about love and devotion: “They say love doesn’t cost a thing, and if it did, I’d go all in.” It’s a tender moment amid an album otherwise charged with swagger and sensuality.
Building his business empire
Beyond the music, “Tycoon” also marks a turning point for Ty Dolla $ign as an entrepreneur. He’s expanding his influence behind the scenes through his new record label, EZMNY, launched in collaboration with Motown Records executive Shawn Barron.
The label’s first signee, Leon Thomas, has already made waves. His single “Mutt” reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart — a strong start for Ty’s venture into executive leadership.
“My goal with EZMNY is to give real artists a chance,” Ty explained. “I didn’t make it until I was 27, and I was always good. Now I want to reach back to people who are actually great.”
He’s confident about the future of the genre, too. “There’s definitely going to be a comeback in R&B very soon,” he said, pointing specifically to rising artists like Thomas as part of that revival.
After ‘Vultures’: A new focus
Fans also continue to speculate about Ty Dolla $ign’s collaboration with Kanye West, known as $, which produced “Vultures 1” and “Vultures 2” in 2024. Both albums debuted at No. 1 and No. 2 on the Billboard 200, a rare feat that solidified their impact on modern hip-hop and experimental R&B.
When asked about the rumored “Vultures 3,” Ty kept his answer open-ended. “There was a lot of music that was done. It could have been out at the time. We made the best music that was out then. Who knows what may happen in the future? I’m open to whatever.”
For now, his full attention is on Tycoon — and on ensuring it becomes another milestone in his career.
Personal reflections and a new documentary
Beyond fame and business, Ty Dolla $ign is also opening up on a personal level. His upcoming documentary, “Still Free TC,” continues the story that began with his 2015 debut album “Free TC.”
The film, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, centers on his brother Big TC, who is serving a life sentence for murder — a conviction Ty believes to be wrongful. The project also provides an intimate look at Ty’s own life, struggles, and rise to stardom.
“I’ve had a lot of friends and fans tell me, ‘You never show anybody for real. You never let anybody in,” he shared. “So this is the time when I let everybody in. I just feel like the people need to see it.”
Ty Dolla $ign’s “Tycoon” era is shaping up to be both a musical renaissance and a declaration of independence. With a world tour on the horizon and his documentary awaiting wider release, the multifaceted artist is stepping into a new phase of creativity, ownership, and authenticity.
“I just want people to feel inspired after they hear it,” Ty said. “I want them to believe in themselves after they hear it — and believe in me. I’m always going to give you the best of the best.”
