Kochi: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been set up in Kerala to investigate a financial fraud case related to the Malayalam hit film “Manjummel Boys.” Actor Soubin Shahir, his father Babu Shahir, and co-producer Shawn Antony are facing allegations of cheating investor Siraj Valiyathura of ₹70 million (around $8.4 million).
The investigation comes after Siraj, a native of Aroor, filed a fresh complaint with the state police and DGP, claiming that he invested money in instalments for the film’s production but was denied the promised profits.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
The case has been registered under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including:
Section 120B – Criminal Conspiracy
Section 34 – Common Intention
Section 406 – Breach of Trust
Section 420 – Cheating
Section 468 – Forgery
In April 2024, Maradu police had already booked the trio following Siraj’s allegations. In June 2025, the Kerala High Court granted them anticipatory bail, but restricted foreign travel without prior court approval.
Recently, the High Court rejected the producers’ request to travel abroad for an award ceremony, saying such travel could affect the ongoing investigation.
Dispute Over Film Finances
Siraj claims he was unfairly excluded from the financial returns, despite funding the film. The accused argue that Siraj delayed payments, which disrupted production. Earlier, the Kerala High Court had refused to quash proceedings against them, keeping the case active.
The investigation is being led by DCP Vinod Pillai, and the SIT will review all accounts, contracts, and evidence related to the film’s finances.
Soubin Shahir’s Career Continues
Despite the legal troubles, Soubin Shahir continues to earn acclaim for his acting. He recently starred as the antagonist Dayal in the Tamil action film Coolie (2025), alongside stars Rajinikanth and Nagarjuna. His energetic performance in the hit song “Monica” has made him one of the film’s breakout stars.
Industry experts note that while legal disputes can affect a celebrity’s public image, talented actors often continue to thrive if their work is strong, and Soubin’s growing popularity shows his career is resilient.
Broader Implications
This case highlights financial risks in the film industry, especially in regional cinema, where investors may face difficulties in tracking production costs and returns. Courts and law enforcement agencies are taking stricter measures to ensure accountability, as seen in the travel restrictions imposed by the High Court.
For the audience, it is a reminder that film success does not always guarantee financial transparency, and proper legal agreements are essential for protecting investments.
The Manjummel Boys fraud investigation is ongoing, and Kerala authorities are taking it seriously. With the SIT now in charge, every aspect of the case — from contracts to bank records — will be reviewed.
Meanwhile, Soubin Shahir continues his acting career, balancing public attention with the legal process. The case underscores the importance of clear financial practices in the film industry and the role of courts in safeguarding investors’ interests.
