In May, Asian equity markets faced a significant wave of foreign selling, primarily driven by growing worries over global inflation and escalating borrowing costs, impacting investor sentiment regionally.
Data from Reuters shows that foreign investors have divested nearly $24.75 billion from Asian equities this month alone. Notably, the previous week noted a staggering $17.27 billion in outflows, marking one of the largest weekly sell-offs in recent times for the area.
The sell-off was exacerbated when the 30-year US Treasury yield reached its highest point since 2007, making equities less appealing as investors shift towards safer, government-backed returns amid economic uncertainties.
Experts suggest that inflation fears fueled by ongoing conflicts and stricter financial conditions are prompting a retreat from growth-oriented markets in Asia, with technology-centric stocks in South Korea and Taiwan facing the brunt of the downturn.
During this tumultuous week, South Korea saw record foreign divestments totaling about $13.14 billion. Taiwan endured nearly $2.88 billion in selling pressure, while Indian markets also experienced withdrawals approximating $1.35 billion.
Market specialists warn that the sensitivity of Asian equity markets to US bond yield fluctuations suggests further caution among investors, who fear that persistently high interest rates might impede corporate earnings and overall economic stability in export-reliant Asian economies.
Nonetheless, some Asian nations attracted foreign capital, with Indonesian stocks receiving nearly $511 million and Thailand notching up $215 million in foreign investments, reflecting selective optimism in particular Southeast Asian markets.
Financial analysts caution that continued volatility is likely in the upcoming weeks as investors remain vigilant regarding inflationary trends, central bank actions, and international geopolitical developments that could further influence capital flows and market stability.
