In Brussels, representatives from over 60 nations convened for high-level discussions, hosted by the European Union, with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohamed Mustafa. The aim is to restore stability and seek enduring peace in both Gaza and the West Bank.
The meeting occurs amidst escalating violence in Gaza and military activities in the West Bank, complicating diplomatic initiatives. Even as global attention shifts towards broader conflicts, European leaders underlined the need to prioritize the Palestinian situation.
Co-hosted by Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, discussions highlighted the increasing difficulty of achieving a two-state solution, which they believe remains the sole path toward lasting peace.
Prévot emphasized, “Each passing day complicates the reality, but the two-state solution must not be disregarded,” reaffirming the commitment from both European and Arab allies.
The EU continues to be the largest financial supporter of the Palestinian Authority under Mahmoud Abbas while aiming for a more influential diplomatic role in the region. The bloc has opted not to partake in initiatives from Donald Trump, stressing instead multilateral cooperation.
During the gathering, Prime Minister Mustafa presented his vision for a unified governance framework in Gaza, advocating for “one state, one government, one law,” in addition to the disarmament of armed groups and complete Israeli withdrawal from the area.
This meeting also coincides with rising humanitarian concerns in Gaza, as well as scrutiny of Israeli practices in the West Bank, including settlement expansions and restrictions on movement. Some EU members are contemplating stronger actions, potentially including sanctions on Israeli settlers.
Experts suggest the talks signify Europe’s determination to maintain a pivotal role in diplomacy and avert further instability in a region vital to global security.
