The recent release 'Kaantha', featuring Dulquer Salmaan, Bhagyashri Borse, and Rana Daggubati, is making waves with its strong critical reception. This Tamil drama, set in the vibrant 1950s Madras, has already accrued an impressive ₹19.95 crore at the box office. The film trails the journey of T. K. Mahadevan (Dulquer Salmaan), who is engaged in filming Tamil cinema's inaugural horror movie, Saantha.
In an engaging conversation with Sudhir Srinivasan, director Selvamani Selvaraj and actress Bhagyashri Borse delved into some of the film's pivotal sequences. Bhagyashri admitted her initial reservations about executing a scene where she is required to slap Dulquer. She expressed:
"Obviously behind the scenes, I was a little hesitant about doing the same, but I think he (Dulquer) wanted that perfection. We really went for it, and he was ready to go through that to get that performance out of him, and I respect that. But I was really, like, hesitant. It is the first time I ever did it."
The director further noted that after completing the scene, Dulquer's face showed signs of effort—an indication of his commitment to the craft.
At its core, 'Kaantha' portrays the conflict between T. K. Mahadevan and his ex-mentor, Ayya (played by Samuthirakani), while highlighting the effects on their families. Bhagyashri plays Kumari, an aspiring actress, and Rana Daggubati takes on the role of Inspector Phoenix, enriching the plot.
Directed by Selvamani and co-produced by Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati under Wayfarer Films and Spirit Media, 'Kaantha' receives accolades for its stunning cinematography, meticulous attention to period detail, and an authentic representation of 1950s Madras, offering viewers both nostalgic and immersive moments.
Overall, 'Kaantha' excels for not just its performances and direction but also for its exploration of Tamil Nadu's early horror cinema, showcasing the dedication and collaboration of its cast. The chemistry between Dulquer Salmaan and Bhagyashri Borse, along with Rana Daggubati's compelling presence, promises a riveting cinematic journey.
