Congress Endorses Vijay's TVK Government Aspirations

Post by : Shakul

Vijay has garnered significant backing from the Indian National Congress as negotiations are underway for forming the next government in Tamil Nadu following the recent state elections. The Congress party confirmed its readiness to support Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) but emphasized a critical condition for the coalition.

As stated by party officials, Congress insisted that the partnership should exclude what they classify as “communal forces” that do not align with the Constitution of India. This declaration came from Girish Chodankar, the All India Congress Committee's Tamil Nadu in-charge, following dialogues with the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party.

With Congress's support, Vijay now bolsters his count by five more MLAs in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. TVK secured 107 seats in the 234-member assembly, marking it the dominant party. With Congress backing, this total elevates to 112 seats, though Vijay remains six seats shy of the necessary majority of 118 to form the government.

Political insiders reveal that Vijay is also engaging with additional regional and Leftist parties, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Communist Party of India, and Communist Party of India Marxist. Should these parties agree to align with TVK, the coalition could surpass the majority threshold, facilitating Vijay’s ascent as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

These recent political maneuvers have stirred considerable enthusiasm across Chennai and the broader state. Vijay’s dynamic entry into the political arena and his impressive electoral results have notably transformed the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, breaking years of hegemony held by the two major Dravidian parties.

The Congress party also articulated that their alliance with TVK rests on principles of mutual respect, secularism, and a unified political vision. Leaders noted that this partnership aims not only for immediate government formation but could persist through future local polls, Lok Sabha elections, and Rajya Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, reports surfaced about certain TVK leaders meeting with Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the leader of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), in Chennai. This meeting has ignited speculation regarding potential political shifts and internal rifts among existing alliances in the state.

The Congress statement also highlighted the bond between Vijay and Rahul Gandhi, noting both leaders’ commitment to honoring the mandate of Tamil Nadu’s electorate while striving for a progressive and secular governance focused on youth and public welfare.

In the recent elections, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam surprised many by winning 108 seats, establishing itself as the most powerful party in the assembly. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam managed just 59 seats, while AIADMK garnered 47 seats. Vijay won in both constituencies he contested and is forecasted to uphold the Perambur seat while potentially vacating Trichy East, leading to a by-election in the near future.
