The Zayed National Museum has been honored as one of the World’s Most Beautiful Museums for 2026 by the Prix Versailles, a distinguished award presented annually at UNESCO in Paris.
This recognition places the UAE’s premier museum among just seven global institutions and as the sole representative from the Middle East on the prestigious 2026 list. The accolade celebrates the museum’s architectural brilliance, sustainable innovations, and cultural relevance.
Created by renowned architect Norman Foster from Foster + Partners, the museum is located in the Saadiyat Cultural District and spans over 56,000 square meters.
Its design, inspired by the graceful wings of a falcon in motion, pays homage to the UAE’s rich tradition of falconry. The building features five soaring steel towers that reach 123 meters in height, making it the tallest structure in the area. These innovative towers function as thermal chimneys, facilitating natural cooling and enhancing air circulation. The external mound is crafted to mirror the UAE’s natural landscape while minimizing solar heat absorption.
Surrounding the museum is the Al Masar Garden, which incorporates indigenous flora and utilizes a traditional falaj irrigation system. Inside, six permanent galleries showcase 300,000 years of regional human history, from ancient archaeological discoveries to the United Arab Emirates’ formation.
The museum also pays tribute to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, emphasizing his dedication to preserving Emirati cultural heritage and identity.
The category of the World’s Most Beautiful Museums was established by Prix Versailles in 2024. Each year, seven museums are selected, with three obtaining top honors in design, both interior and exterior.
Other renowned museums featured in the 2026 lineup include institutions from China, Japan, Lithuania, the United States, and Uzbekistan, showcasing a rich tapestry of global architectural and cultural distinction.
