A massive explosion at a fireworks manufacturing factory in central China has killed at least 21 people and injured more than 60 others, according to Chinese state media and local authorities. The deadly blast took place in Liuyang city in Hunan province, an area widely known as one of China’s largest fireworks production centers.
The explosion reportedly occurred on Monday afternoon at a facility operated by Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company. Witnesses described hearing a powerful blast followed by thick smoke rising into the sky as parts of the factory collapsed from the impact. Emergency teams rushed to the area soon after the incident and began large-scale rescue operations to search for survivors trapped under debris.
Chinese authorities confirmed that at least 61 people were injured in the explosion, with several victims receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. Rescue workers, firefighters, medical staff, and disaster response teams were deployed to the site to control the fire and prevent further explosions. Officials said nearly 500 emergency responders participated in the operation.
Authorities also evacuated nearby residents after concerns emerged over two black powder storage warehouses located close to the blast area. Rescue officials feared additional explosions could happen because fireworks factories store highly explosive materials used in manufacturing. Robots and water-spraying equipment were reportedly used during rescue efforts to reduce risk for emergency workers operating at the scene.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a full investigation into the cause of the accident and ordered authorities to make “all-out efforts” to rescue survivors and treat the injured. He also instructed local governments to strengthen industrial safety inspections and improve hazard prevention measures across dangerous industries.
Local police have reportedly taken control measures against company officials while investigators continue examining what caused the explosion. Initial reports suggest the accident may have happened during the handling or production of explosive materials, although the exact cause has not yet been officially confirmed.
China’s fireworks industry has faced repeated criticism over workplace safety concerns in recent years. Despite stricter regulations and government inspections, accidents involving chemicals and explosive materials continue to occur at manufacturing facilities across the country. Experts say fireworks production remains a high-risk industry because of the large amounts of combustible material stored inside factories.
The latest tragedy has once again raised concerns about industrial safety standards in China and the enforcement of regulations at hazardous manufacturing sites. Officials said investigations and rescue operations are continuing as authorities work to determine the full extent of the damage and identify those responsible for the disaster.
