Canada Threatens Stellantis as Jeep Compass Production Moves US

Post by : Mina Carter

The Canadian government has threatened legal action against global carmaker Stellantis following its announcement to relocate production of the Jeep Compass from Ontario to the United States.

Earlier this week, Stellantis revealed a $13 billion investment in its U.S. operations, including plans to shift Compass manufacturing to its Illinois plant.

Canada’s Foreign Minister, Melanie Joly, emphasized that Stellantis had made a “legally binding” commitment to maintain production in Brampton in exchange for financial support. She warned that the government would “exercise all options, including legal,” if the company fails to honor the agreement.

In a letter to Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa, Joly highlighted that Canada had invested “billions of dollars” in the company, and moving production could threaten the future of the Brampton factory.

Stellantis described the U.S. investment as the largest in the company's history, stating it would “drive growth, strengthen our manufacturing footprint and bring more American jobs.” The statement, however, made no reference to Canadian operations.

Joly responded by recalling the company’s long-standing partnership with Canada, noting that the government had supported Stellantis in 2009 to prevent bankruptcy. She urged the company to reciprocate its commitment to Canadians.
