The 78-year-old, founder of the now-closed Apple Daily, was found guilty of colluding with foreign forces to endanger national security and publishing seditious articles under Hong Kong’s stringent China-imposed national security law. Lai has spent five years in custody awaiting the trial and now faces the prospect of life imprisonment.
Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Anita Anand, expressed deep concern over the erosion of rights, freedoms, and Hong Kong’s autonomy, calling Lai’s prosecution “politically driven.”
Family members say Lai’s health has deteriorated significantly during his solitary confinement. His daughter Claire emphasized that her father’s focus is now solely on reuniting with family and living peacefully.
International leaders, including the U.S. and U.K., have also expressed concerns, calling for Lai’s release on humanitarian grounds. Canadian activists urge Ottawa to take concrete diplomatic action, including sanctions on Hong Kong officials responsible for political repression.
