Canada has approved Ozempic, a drug made by Novo Nordisk, for a new and important use. The medicine, already known for treating type 2 diabetes, can now also be used to slow down chronic kidney disease and lower the risk of kidney failure and heart-related deaths in people with type 2 diabetes.
This is the first approval in Canada for a treatment that not only controls diabetes but also protects the kidneys from long-term damage.
Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common health problems in the world. It does not only affect blood sugar but also increases the risk of serious problems like kidney failure and heart disease. Novo Nordisk estimates that nearly 40% of people with type 2 diabetes have chronic kidney disease. In Canada, around 4 million people live with the condition, while in the United States, the number is about 37 million.
For these patients, the approval of Ozempic brings new hope.
Health Canada’s approval was based on a late-stage clinical trial. The study showed that a 1 mg dose of Ozempic reduced the risk of kidney-related deaths and major heart problems by 24%. This makes Ozempic more than just a diabetes drug — it is also a protective treatment against two of the most dangerous complications of the disease.
Novo Nordisk and its American rival Eli Lilly have been competing to expand the uses of their GLP-1 drugs. These medicines were first known for treating diabetes and later became famous as powerful weight-loss treatments.
Now, both companies are working to prove that their drugs can also treat other major illnesses. If successful, this could lead to wider insurance coverage and better access for patients.
In fact, earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Ozempic for the same kidney protection use. Novo’s other drug, Wegovy, which contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic, was recently cleared in the U.S. to treat a serious liver disease. Meanwhile, Eli Lilly’s drug Zepbound has been approved to treat obstructive sleep apnea.
This approval marks a turning point for diabetes care in Canada. For many years, patients only had treatments that focused on lowering blood sugar. Now, with Ozempic’s expanded approval, doctors have a medicine that can also save kidneys and hearts.
The move also highlights how quickly medical science is advancing. Drugs that started as treatments for one condition are now being used to fight several related diseases.
For millions of people living with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, the approval of Ozempic in Canada is an important step forward. It not only offers better health outcomes but also improves quality of life by reducing the risk of life-threatening complications.
As science continues to move forward, drugs like Ozempic may help change how chronic diseases are treated around the world.
