Francesco Calzona has stepped down as head coach of the Slovakia national football team after failing to reach an agreement over a contract extension, bringing an end to his tenure that saw notable progress and memorable performances.
The decision was confirmed by the Slovak Football Association, which stated that discussions over a new deal did not lead to a mutual agreement. Calzona’s contract had expired on March 31, and while the association offered him a two-year extension, both sides could not agree on the terms, particularly the duration of future cooperation.
Calzona, who previously worked with SSC Napoli, took charge of Slovakia in August 2022. During his time as coach, he played a key role in improving the team’s performance and competitiveness on the international stage. One of the highlights of his tenure was a notable 2-0 victory over Germany during World Cup qualifying, which demonstrated the team’s growing strength under his leadership.
Under the 57-year-old coach, Slovakia also made a strong appearance at the UEFA Euro 2024 held in Germany. The team advanced to the round of 16 and came close to reaching the quarterfinals, which would have been a historic achievement for the nation. However, their campaign ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat after extra time against England national football team.
Calzona’s final match in charge was a 2-0 friendly victory over Romania, marking a positive end to his time with the team despite the contract disagreement. Overall, his tenure is seen as a period of steady progress, during which Slovakia strengthened its position in European football and showed the ability to compete with stronger teams.
The departure now leaves Slovakia searching for a new head coach as it looks to build on recent improvements and prepare for upcoming international competitions.
