A deadly train collision near Jakarta has left at least 14 people dead and dozens injured, after an express train crashed into a stationary commuter train late Monday night. The accident occurred near Bekasi Timur station, where emergency teams carried out a nearly 12-hour rescue operation to save trapped passengers and recover victims from the wreckage.
According to officials, the incident began when a taxi struck a commuter train at a level crossing, forcing it to stop on the tracks. Minutes later, a long-distance express train approached the same track and was unable to halt in time, slamming into the rear of the stalled train. The impact caused severe damage to multiple carriages, leaving twisted metal and debris scattered across the site.
Rescue teams from Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency worked through the night using heavy machinery to cut open mangled compartments and pull survivors from inside. While all 240 passengers aboard the express train were safely evacuated, the commuter train suffered the worst damage, with 14 confirmed fatalities reported from its coaches.
Survivors described scenes of chaos and panic inside the train. Many passengers were trapped under collapsed seats and luggage, while others struggled to escape in the darkness following the crash. Several injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals, where doctors prioritized those in critical condition.
Authorities confirmed that dozens of people sustained injuries, though the exact number and severity are still being assessed. Hospitals in the area remained on high alert as families gathered, searching for loved ones and awaiting updates from officials.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited the injured and expressed condolences to the victims’ families. He also ordered an immediate investigation into the cause of the accident and called for urgent improvements to railway safety infrastructure.
Preliminary findings suggest that unguarded or poorly managed level crossings may have contributed to the tragedy. The government has announced plans to replace such crossings with safer alternatives like flyovers to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The crash has once again highlighted ongoing safety concerns in Indonesia’s rail network, where accidents linked to crossings and infrastructure gaps have occurred in the past. For many families affected by this disaster, the focus now remains on recovery and accountability, as the nation mourns the lives lost in a routine journey that turned tragic within moments.
