Ajay Devgn’s eagerly awaited sequel, De De Pyaar De 2, premiered in cinemas on Friday, bringing together a star-studded cast including Rakul Preet Singh, R. Madhavan, and Meezaan Jafri. Directed by Anshul Sharma and written by Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain, the film has received a varied response on its opening day at the box office.
Initial projections indicate that De De Pyaar De 2 earned around Rs 8.5 crore on its debut. This figure is slightly less than the original film’s Rs 9.11 crore opening from 2019, but it did manage to outpace another recent release, Son of Sardaar 2, which started with Rs 7.5 crore. The first Son of Sardaar (2012) had a stronger debut at Rs 10.7 crore, reflecting the inconsistent performance of sequels in Devgn’s film history.
Of Devgn’s 2024 line-up, the highest opener remains Raid 2, which was directed by Raj Kumar Gupta and co-starred Riteish Deshmukh, pulling in Rs 19.25 crore on its opening day—almost doubling the Rs 10.04 crore debut of the original Raid.
Alongside Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh, De De Pyaar De 2 also showcases talents like Javed Jaafery, Meezaan Jafri, Ishita Dutta, and Gautami Kapoor. Devgn and Madhavan, who previously starred together in Vikas Bahl’s Shaitaan, achieved significant success with their last collaboration, opening at Rs 14.75 crore and ultimately grossing Rs 147 crore domestically. This sequel was released across over 5,100 screens nationwide, hoping to capture the charm of its predecessor while appealing to a broader demographic.
Despite a somewhat tepid start on its opening day, the film’s weekend and subsequent performance will be critical in determining whether De De Pyaar De 2 can secure enduring box office success. With its star-studded ensemble, captivating narrative, and appeal as a sequel, it holds promise to attract audiences despite the quiet beginning.
