Historic Verdict Against Former Brazilian President

Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison. The Supreme Court found him guilty of leading a plot to overthrow the government after losing the 2022 presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The court also barred Bolsonaro from running for public office until 2033.

The sentence was handed down by a panel of five justices. Four voted to convict him, while one voted to acquit. Bolsonaro, who was under house arrest during the trial, did not attend the final hearing. His lawyers have called the sentence “absurdly excessive” and plan to appeal.

Charges and Court Findings

Bolsonaro was found guilty on five charges, all linked to his effort to stay in power after losing the election. Prosecutors said he started plotting a coup long before the 2022 vote, trying to convince military leaders to support him and spreading doubts about Brazil’s electoral system.

The court also found that Bolsonaro was aware of plans to attack President Lula, his vice president, and a Supreme Court justice. The plot included coordination with top military officials and other senior leaders. Seven co-conspirators were also convicted, including two former defense ministers, a former spy chief, and a former security minister.

Although the military did not fully support Bolsonaro, his supporters stormed government buildings on January 8, 2023. More than 1,500 people were arrested after order was restored.

Supreme Court Justices Speak Out

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversaw the trial, said the country had come close to returning to authoritarian rule. He stated that a political group “doesn’t know how to lose elections” and almost caused Brazil to repeat its 20-year dictatorship.

Justice Cármen Lúcia, who cast the decisive vote for conviction, compared the attempted coup to a “virus” that can harm society if left unchecked. She emphasized that democracy must be protected and no one is immune to authoritarian threats.

The sole dissenting vote came from Luiz Fux. He argued that the accusations were not proven and voted to acquit Bolsonaro.

Reaction from Bolsonaro and Supporters

Bolsonaro has previously called the trial a “witch hunt” designed to prevent him from running in the 2026 election. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed surprise at the verdict, comparing it to his own experiences with legal challenges.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized the Brazilian Supreme Court’s ruling, calling it unjust, but Brazil’s foreign ministry responded firmly. They said that such comments would not threaten Brazilian democracy and defended the court’s independence.

The Impact on Brazil

This ruling marks a historic moment in Brazil’s democratic history. It shows the Supreme Court’s determination to protect democratic institutions against leaders who try to stay in power illegally. Experts say Bolsonaro could spend the rest of his life in prison if the sentence is fully enforced, though appeals may slightly change his situation.

The case also highlights the dangers of political unrest in a country with a history of military rule. Brazil spent decades under dictatorship in the 20th century, and the court stressed that protecting elections and democratic processes is crucial for the nation’s future.

Jair Bolsonaro’s conviction is a strong message that no one is above the law, even former presidents. While his supporters may continue to challenge the court’s decision, the trial reinforces the strength of Brazil’s democratic institutions. The country now faces a path toward recovery and stability after a period of political tension and threats to democracy.

This historic verdict also reminds the world of the importance of upholding elections, respecting the rule of law, and safeguarding democratic norms.
