At the prestigious Wall Street Journal Innovator Awards held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Grammy-winning singer Billie Eilish delivered a powerful message calling on billionaires to use their wealth for the greater good. Honored with the Music Innovator Award for her impactful contributions to the music industry, the 23-year-old artist took the moment to highlight global challenges and urge those with tremendous wealth to act responsibly.

Speaking to an audience that included some of the world's wealthiest, such as Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg and philanthropist Priscilla Chan, Eilish said, “We’re in a time right now where the world is really, really bad and really dark, and people need empathy and help more than kind of ever, especially in our country.” She continued, “If you have money, it would be great to use it for good things — maybe give it to some people that need it.”

In a witty yet pointed statement, Eilish asked the room, “If you’re a billionaire, why are you a billionaire? No hate, but yeah, give your money away, shorties.” The remark drew laughter and applause from attendees, though Zuckerberg reportedly remained silent during the moment.

The event also recognized Priscilla Chan for her philanthropic work in science, further highlighting the couple's pledge to donate 99% of their Meta shares to charitable causes during their lifetimes. Eilish’s speech coincided with the announcement that she would donate $11.5 million from her ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’ tour proceeds to organizations dedicated to food equity, climate justice, and carbon reduction efforts.

Eilish’s environmental commitments extend beyond donations. She shared that her ongoing tour incorporates sustainable practices such as plant-based catering, biodegradable confetti, and merchandise made from recycled cotton, reflecting her dedication to addressing climate change through her platform.

The singer stressed the urgency of compassion at a time when many face hardship, saying, “People need empathy and help more than ever.” Her call was a reminder of the growing disparities in wealth and the responsibility that comes with great fortune, striking a chord amid increasing public scrutiny of billionaires’ roles in society.

The WSJ Innovator Awards celebrate influential figures making significant impacts across beauty, entertainment, and fashion. Eilish's award recognizes her artistic innovation and advocacy, positioning her as a leading voice not just in music but in social awareness.

Following the speech, audiences and industry observers praised Eilish for her courage and clarity, noting how meaningful it is for influential artists to leverage their platforms for social good. While some critics questioned her directness, many lauded her for leading by example through her personal donations and sustainable touring practices.

This moment adds to Eilish’s evolving public image as an artist committed to both creative excellence and social responsibility, standing out in a world increasingly concerned about economic inequality and environmental challenges.
