Authorities in Bangladesh have issued a nationwide security alert following intelligence warnings about possible militant attacks targeting key locations across the country. Police officials described the directive as urgent, with increased vigilance ordered for both national and local security forces.
According to officials, potential targets include the national parliament complex, military and police installations, places of worship, and public entertainment centres. Security agencies have been instructed to take extra precautions, especially around sensitive locations such as armouries and government facilities.
The alert comes after the arrest of Istiak Ahmed Sami, also known as Abu Bakkar, who is believed to be linked to a banned militant organisation. Authorities say he had connections with former military personnel, raising concerns about a wider network involved in planning attacks. Intelligence reports have also identified additional suspects who are considered highly dangerous.
Specialised units, including the Criminal Investigation Department, Special Branch, and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, have been directed to intensify monitoring and intelligence gathering. Local police across the country have also been placed on high alert, with increased security measures at police stations and public places.
The situation is further complicated by a rise in extremist activity over the past 18 months, particularly during the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. This period followed major political unrest, including the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Authorities have also raised concerns about a large number of escaped prisoners. Reports indicate that around 2,700 inmates fled during earlier unrest, with nearly 700 still at large. Some of these individuals are believed to have links to extremist groups, and weapons were reportedly taken during prison breaks, increasing the risk to public safety.
Major incidents during that period included jailbreaks in areas such as Narsingdi and Gazipur, where hundreds of inmates managed to escape. These developments have added to the concerns of security agencies as they work to prevent further instability.
Officials say the current alert is a precautionary step to prevent any potential attacks and ensure public safety. Security forces are continuing to monitor the situation closely, while urging citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious activity.
The situation highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining security amid political changes and rising extremist threats, as authorities work to stabilise the country and prevent possible attacks.
