Anupam Kher Shares Humorous Tales of Marijuana and Bhaang

Post by : Mara Collins

Renowned actor Anupam Kher recently reminisced about his youthful forays into marijuana and bhaang during an episode of the podcast Unfiltered by Samdish. The 70-year-old actor detailed these humorous yet intense incidents that ultimately steered him away from such substances.

One standout story involved his experience with marijuana. “I think I must have taken two drags, and then I looked up at the sky. A plane must have taken off from the airport, so I started watching it. I kept watching it until it became a tiny dot in the sky, and I think I kept looking until it must have landed at Heathrow Airport,” he recalled.

Kher confessed that the drug left him feeling bewildered and uneasy. “I had gone crazy. When I got into my car later, I couldn’t tell whether the road was moving or the car was moving,” he shared. This overwhelming experience prompted him to steer clear of marijuana in the future.

His encounters with bhaang during his time at the National School of Drama (NSD) were even more entertaining. Kher recounted, “Once I tried it, I promised I would never do it again because I laughed for eight hours straight.” He also mentioned the amusing antics of his peers, who, while under its effect, stood on the terrace belligerently warning the warden about, ‘The army is coming.’ He joked, “I kept laughing and begged them to save me.”

Another memorable moment involved a situation where he anxiously awaited a response from a friend who seemed unresponsive. “It felt exactly like scenes from Jim Carrey’s film The Mask. After that, I never touched bhaang again,” he added.

Kher also recounted a humorous incident where airport authorities mistook the incense in his luggage for drugs. His wife, Kirron Kher, amusingly intensified the situation by saying, “‘Charas lekar ghoom rahe ho (You’re travelling with hashish)?” He humorously noted, “I told her, ‘If I survive these people, I’ll come out and divorce you.’

Throughout these anecdotes, Kher illustrated the seriousness of early substance exposure and its lingering effects. He depicted these experiences as both terrifying and humorous, shaping his later choices. The actor stressed that such experiences served as lessons to avoid substances like marijuana and bhaang entirely.

Anupam Kher’s stories offer a candid glimpse into the comedic aspects of his life, showing that even stars have their share of amusing childhood tales. His reflections bring to light the lesson that youthful curiosity can lead to unexpected and memorable adventures.
